Pre-Season Lawn Mower Check List.

Here are some basic instructions before using your lawn mower this year. Always refer to your service or owner’s manual to check for anything that is not on this list, safety precautions or maintenance items.

1). Check your air filter. Clean it, at the very least. If it is ripped or misshapen replace it. I have a number of common air filters in stock, and others are available to order.

2). Check the spark plug, remove and inspect the plug for a worn electrode, or excessive combustion build up. If you plan on just cleaning it, use a wire brush and beĀ  sure to re-gap it before putting it back in.

3). Check your oil level. Now would be the best time to change it if you didn’t do it in the fall. My personal advice is to change it before first use, rather than before storing it.

4). Hopefully you drained the fuel before storing the machine. If you didn’t, drain out the old fuel or siphon it out with a siphon pump. Add some fuel stabilizer. It is likely that there is some old fuel left in the carburetor float bowl. This can make the machine hard or impossible to start, without remove the carb for a comprehensive cleaning.

5). Check your blade. See that it is relatively sharp and has no visible dents or damage. Sharpen or replace the blade as required.

6). If you use a riding mower, make sure your battery has a full charge, and is holding it. Check for corrosion at the battery terminals and clean them as is necessary. Use caution that you wear safety glasses, and some gloves to avoid the acid from burning you.

7). Clean the deck, top and bottom. Remove all the old dried grass, especially under the deck. This will cut down on corrosion.

8). Inspect your belts. Replace belts if they seem loose, worn, frayed, or have small chunks missing. Now is the time, rather than half way through cutting your lawn.

I hope this helps. Maybe you won’t have to come see me this spring, but I am always available for any questions or repairs.

Thanks,
